The Gospel Truth About Jesus Christ

What is the “gospel truth” about Jesus Christ? Who is He? What did He do? We believe that Jesus is truly God and truly man. He lived in the part of the world known as Israel today. He is not a mystical figure or a fairy tale, but a historical figure.  He died on the cross in our place, taking the punishment we deserve for our sins.  Jesus arose bodily from the dead, is now in Heaven. Jesus is highly exalted, has all authority, and will judge the living and the dead upon His return.

The Apostle John said this, “there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were written in detail, I suppose that even the world itself *would not contain the books that *would be written.” We agree. This webpage cannot possibly tell you everything there is to know about Jesus. It is just a start …

Jesus God and Man

There is no mistaking that Jesus was viewed as a man while on the earth. Nobody called him an alien, He had a family. He had human emotions, ate food, talked, walked, and did all the things that humans do. Jesus was fully man.

At the same time as being a man, Jesus was God. This is what created confusion about who He was among the people of His day. Some thought He was a wise man or a great prophet. Others thought He was a madman. Still others couldn’t decide or didn’t care. But Jesus said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). That means He claimed to be nothing less than God in human flesh.

Many people today don’t understand that Jesus claimed to be God. They’re content to think of Him as little more than a great moral teacher. But even His enemies understood His claims to deity. That’s why they tried to stone Him to death (John 5:18; 10:33) and eventually had Him crucified (John 19:7).

C.S. Lewis observed, “You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to” (Mere Christianity [Macmillan, 1952], pp. 40-41).

The biblical claims of Jesus are true, He is God

Jesus Holy

Jesus was born of a virgin, her name was Mary. An angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:35). Because Jesus was born of a virgin, He did not inherit the sin nature that all of us are born with. Like God, Jesus was perfect, holy, in every way. He never did anything wrong.

 Jesus sin bearer

Jesus was called, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” The Bible teaches that without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 10:22). Jesus, became a willing sacrifice for our sins upon the cross. He gave His blood so we could have our sins forgiven.

According to the Jewish religion, a perfect lamb was sacrificed during the yearly celebration of Passover. This was the very holiday being celebrated in Jerusalem the day Jesus died on the cross. This sacrificial lamb signified the “passing over” of the wrath (anger) of God. God spared those that sacrificed the lamb and those that didn’t sacrifice a lamb experienced death.

The Bible says, “God made him who knew no sin, to be sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” This means Jesus, who is holy, took our sin and exchanged it with us by giving us His holiness.

 Jesus died and rose again

Jesus died on the cross, having taken our sins upon Himself. Jesus came to die, but Jesus also came to rise from the dead. Jesus Christ continues to live with the power of indestructible life.

Jesus Christ is the “Firstfruit” of those who die; which means He is the first to rise in an immortal, indestructible body, and as such He heads a whole new order as its Sovereign. Jesus Christ brought everlasting life to a dying Creation.

The resurrection proves Christ’s victory over sin, evil, and death. The resurrection of Christ is why we have hope.

As we think of the terrible events that take place in the world, as we think about the horror, the evil, we are filled with despair. Words to describe how we feel seem empty and shallow. Human justice is unable to hand down adequate sentences for many crimes, besides; no human judge can restore life to those who are murdered.

God has seen our need for a Savior. So, we look at the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The power over sin and the hope of resurrection over death is the only adequate answer to provide peace of mind. Christ the Judge of the living and the dead and Christ is the giver of eternal life. He is our hope, our light in darkness.

People are looking for answers. The answer we need to hear is, “evil, sin, destruction, and death do not have the last word.” Jesus is not finished speaking and Jesus has the last word. Sin and death are defeated by Jesus Christ.

 Jesus highly exalted

Before leaving earth, Jesus said, “All authority is given to me.” Jesus Christ is King of all the kings and Lord of all the Lords. He is absolutely over all things. He sits on the highest throne in Heaven. Jesus will judge all of creation.

There is no place of darkness where the Prince of Glory may not shine His light. There is no door he cannot open. He has the keys to every kingdom and every domain. Every knee bows and every tongue confesses to Christ. He is supreme over all. Our Savior has first place over sickness and death. He has first place in EVERYTHING.

Jesus coming back

Just as the Bible predicted the first coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, the Bible talks of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus said in the same way He left, on a cloud, He is coming again. When He returns, He will forever conquer all evil and it will be forever removed. He will judge Creation. For those who are perfect, righteous, and holy, they will be able to live forever with Jesus. Those that are evil, will be judged and cast into the lake of fire for eternity. Are you ready for Jesus to come back again?
